Privacy Policy

Last updated: February 17, 2026

Bad Historian ("we," "us," or "our") operates the Bad Historian mobile application and the website at badhistorian.com. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices.

Information We Collect

Information You Provide

  • Email address — if you sign up for our mailing list to hear about new tours and cities. This is optional.
  • Purchase information — when you buy tours or city packs through the App Store or Google Play, your purchase is processed by Apple or Google. We receive a record of what you purchased but not your payment details.
  • Voice recordings — if you use the "Ask the Historian" feature, your voice question is temporarily processed to generate a response. We do not store your voice recordings after the response is delivered.

Information Collected Automatically

  • Location data — the app uses your device's GPS to trigger audio at tour stops (geofencing). Location data is processed on your device and is not stored on our servers. You can disable location access in your device settings, though the geofenced tour experience requires it.
  • Device information — we collect basic device information (device type, operating system version, app version) to improve the app and troubleshoot issues.
  • Usage data — we collect anonymized analytics about how you interact with the app (tours started, tours completed, features used) to improve our content and experience.
  • Push notification tokens — if you enable notifications, we store a device token to send you updates about new tours and features. You can disable notifications at any time in your device settings.

How We Use Your Information

  • To deliver and improve the tour experience
  • To process and manage your purchases
  • To send you updates about new tours and cities (if you opted in)
  • To respond to your questions through the "Ask the Historian" feature
  • To analyze app usage and improve our content
  • To send push notifications you've opted into

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate the app:

  • Supabase — database and backend infrastructure
  • RevenueCat — purchase management and subscription handling
  • OpenAI — powers the "Ask the Historian" Q&A feature
  • ElevenLabs — text-to-speech for dynamic audio responses
  • PostHog — privacy-focused product analytics
  • Apple App Store / Google Play — payment processing

Each of these services has their own privacy policy governing how they handle data. We do not sell your personal information to any third party.

Data Retention

  • Email addresses — retained until you unsubscribe or request removal.
  • Purchase records — retained as long as needed to provide you access to your purchased content.
  • Voice recordings — not retained. Processed in real time and discarded.
  • Analytics data — retained in anonymized form.
  • Push notification tokens — retained until you disable notifications or uninstall the app.

Your Choices

  • Location — you can disable location access in your device's Settings. Tours will still play manually, but geofenced auto-play won't work.
  • Notifications — you can disable push notifications in the app's settings or your device's Settings.
  • Email — every email includes an unsubscribe link. You can also contact us to be removed.
  • Analytics — you can limit ad tracking and analytics through your device's privacy settings.

Children's Privacy

Bad Historian is designed for general audiences. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

Security

We use industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) and secure cloud infrastructure. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your data.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We'll post the updated version on this page with a new "last updated" date. For significant changes, we may also notify you through the app.
