"Look at the red brick buildings flanking the square. Those matching rows — one on each side — are the Pontalba Buildings. They're often called the oldest apartment buildings in the United States, which is a great story and also wrong. They were built as row houses in eighteen forty-nine. They didn't become apartments until the nineteen thirties, when the W-P-A converted them during the Depression."
