It looks like someone took a completely normal Earl Young stone cottage, drew a line straight down the middle, and sliced the other half clean off. One side is the rounded stone and the wavy roof you know by now. The other side is just... a flat wall. A blank vertical face of stone where the rest of the house should be, like the building got interrupted mid-sentence.

It looks like a mistake. It is not a mistake. It is a grudge, in masonry.

Here's what happened. Young built this in the late nineteen forties out of solid granite and fieldstone, on the foundation of an old carriage house. And he wanted it bigger. He owned the lot next door. He fully intended for this house to keep going. But the city said no — you cannot build over the property line, Earl, that's what property lines are for. And Earl Young, a man who did not take the word no with any grace whatsoever, responded the way he always did: he found a way to

lose the argument as loudly as possible.

He built the house right up against the line the city wouldn't let him cross, and then he walled the whole thing off flat. Just capped it. Left it looking permanently amputated, so that everyone walking down Park Avenue for the rest of time would see a house cut in half and wonder what happened.
